Rhein Fire Win Nailbiter Against Berlin Thunder
Jonathan Scott seals it late as Fire hold off a relentless Thunder side in the German derby
Final Score: Berlin Thunder at Rhein Fire – 36:45
Not the Walkover Anyone Expected
Rhein Fire were the heavy favourites heading into the German derby, and many expected them to win comfortably. Berlin had other ideas. The Thunder came out with a completely different look to their offense, particularly on the ground, and it was clear they had taken lessons from their second half against the Panthers Wroclaw. Nearly 500 total yards, a balanced attack through air and ground, and a performance that showed a Thunder team capable of going toe to toe with anyone on their day.
Both Offenses Deliver, Both Defenses Struggle
Neither defense could find a way to make the other one-dimensional, and the result was an open, back-and-forth contest full of big plays on both sides. For Rhein Fire, the passing game did the early damage, with Kaylon Geiger and Harlan Kwofie each topping 125 receiving yards. Jonathan Scott’s running game also grew as the game wore on. The Thunder matched them at every turn, keeping this genuinely tight throughout.
Sullivan’s Only Mistake Proves Decisive
Jakeb Sullivan was outstanding for Berlin. He led his team with real authority and left everything on the field. But one interception, his only real error of the afternoon, handed Rhein Fire excellent field position at a critical moment. Add to that seven costly penalties on the Thunder side, which repeatedly put them in difficult situations, and a Fire pass rush that turned up the pressure in the moments that mattered most, and the margin between the two teams began to grow just enough.
Scott Seals It
With two minutes left on the clock and just two points separating the sides, Jonathan Scott found the end zone on the ground to put the game beyond reach. A fitting end to a contest that had been decided by fine margins throughout.
What’s Next
Berlin head into a well-earned bye week in Week 6. Rhein Fire, meanwhile, travel to face the Alpine Rams with momentum behind them and a firm grip on the top of the North West Conference.
