Nickson Massa came home and delivered
When the Alpine Rams traveled to London this week, most people expected a tough game for the young franchise. What nobody could have scripted was the story that unfolded on the sideline before kickoff. A few days before the game, the Rams signed Nickson Massa, a London-born defensive back who grew up not far from the very stadium he was about to play in. His family was in the stands. The Warriors were on the other sideline. And the Alpine Rams walked away with the win.
From the stands to the roster in days
Massa was not even part of the team a week ago. The Rams signed him at short notice and threw him straight into their first road game of the season. For most players, that kind of situation would be overwhelming. For Massa, it was personal. He had previously trained with the London Warriors for a couple of weeks, but the club decided to go in a different direction. On Sunday, he made sure nobody forgot that decision.
After the final whistle, he made it clear he had a point to prove. „I’m here for a reason,“ he said. „I’m thankful that Alpine picked me up. I was able to ball out here.“ It was not a moment of anger. It was a moment of confidence, earned on the field.
A message to the next generation
One of the most powerful moments in Massa’s postgame interview had nothing to do with the score. When asked what he would say to young kids watching and realising that European players can compete at this level, his answer was straightforward. „You just gotta believe in yourself, keep pushing. Even all the doubters keep telling you no, it ain’t gonna happen, just show them. Don’t even tell them, just show them it’s possible.“
For a league still in its first season, moments like that carry real weight. Massa is exactly the kind of player AFLE was built around. Homegrown, hungry and performing when it matters.
Alpine are not here to make up the numbers
At 1-1, the Alpine Rams are showing they can compete and win against good teams on the road. „Alpine, we’re not a joke,“ Massa said after the final whistle. „We’re not here to play games. We’re here to win it all.“ For a franchise still writing the first pages of its history, winning away in London, in a game that went to the final seconds, says a great deal about who they are.
The Rams head into Week 4 with momentum, belief and a story that is only just getting started.
