Vienna Vikings dominate Panthers Wrocław to win first AFLE Gold Bowl

Vikings explode out of the gate

There was little time for a close Gold Bowl to develop. Vienna scored three touchdowns in the opening quarter, with quarterback Ben Holmes finding his tight end Florian Bierbaumer and wide receiver Yannick Mayr through the air before running back Albert Wiesigstrauch added a rushing touchdown. The Vikings led 21–0 after the first quarter and continued to pile on the pressure.

By halftime, Vienna had built a commanding 48–5 advantage. The statistics explain the gap. The Vikings had already produced 277 total yards, compared with just 145 for Wrocław. Holmes and the passing attack had generated 216 yards, while Vienna had also rushed for 61 yards.

The Vikings were particularly efficient on third down, converting four of five attempts in the first half alone. Wrocław, meanwhile, failed on all seven of its third-down opportunities in the first two quarters. The Panthers did control the clock for 18:50, but possession alone could not compensate for their inability to sustain drives.

QB Ben Holmes controls the Gold Bowl

Holmes was at the centre of Vienna’s offensive masterclass. The quarterback completed 14 of 18 passes for 331 yards and six touchdowns, repeatedly finding gaps in the Panthers secondary. Wide receiver Darrell Stewart Jr. became one of his favourite targets of the afternoon, catching three touchdown passes. 

Wrocław quarterback Jameson Wang, who had been one of the league’s standout performers throughout the season and was voted league MVP last night, never found his rhythm in this season finale. He finished with 13 completions on 24 attempts for 81 yards and no touchdowns, although he did contribute 73 rushing yards on the ground.

Panthers struggle to stop Vikings offense

The second half followed the same pattern. By the end of the third quarter, Vienna had extended the lead to 61–5 while accumulating 413 total yards: 325 passing and 88 rushing. 

The Panthers did improve their third-down efficiency slightly, but Vienna remained far more effective, converting four of six attempts during the first three quarters compared with Wrocław’s two of nine.

Vienna finish a historic first AFLE season

The result completed a remarkable inaugural campaign for the Vikings. Their only regular-season defeat had come against the same Panthers team they dominated today, but Vienna produced the perfect response when the championship was on the line. Wrocław had hoped its 34–31 regular-season upset would provide the blueprint for another victory, yet the Gold Bowl became a completely different story.

Vienna’s discipline, explosive passing game and ability to turn early possessions into touchdowns proved to be decisive. In the first AFLE championship game, the Vikings did not simply win, they put themselves in the history books as the league’s first-ever champions.
