Hamburg Football names Marcus Herford as the franchise’s first ever head coach
Hamburg Football has made its first major coaching appointment. Marcus Herford has been confirmed as the franchise’s first ever head coach, taking on the role of offensive coordinator alongside it and bringing a decade of European coaching experience to one of the AFLE’s newest clubs.

A coach shaped by European football
Herford has been a familiar name in the European football coaching community since 2016. His journey has taken him through some of the continent’s most established programs, including the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes, the Milano Seamen, the Berlin Thunder and most notably the Hildesheim Invaders, where he made his biggest impression and built the reputation that has followed him ever since. That breadth of experience across different countries, cultures and competition levels gives Herford a perspective on European football that few coaches of his age can match.
A quarterback’s mind running the offense
As head coach and offensive coordinator, Herford will shape how Hamburg Football plays from day one. His instincts on that side of the ball were formed early: he played quarterback and wide receiver at the University of Kansas, giving him a player’s understanding of the positions he will now be responsible for developing and deploying. That background tends to show up in how coaches build offenses, and Hamburg fans can expect a system designed around skill, creativity and attacking intent.
What this means for Hamburg
Herford is well known and well respected across the European football community. The city of Hamburg has the talent, the passion and the history to compete at the highest level in Europe, and in Herford it has a head coach who understands that and wants to be the one to deliver on it.
