Why the London Warriors could be a real playoff threat against Vienna
The London Warriors (6-6) enter Saturday’s AFLE playoff Semi Final against the Vienna Vikings (11-1) as clear underdogs, but writing them off could be a mistake. After a difficult start to their inaugural season, London have developed into a dangerous, physical team with enough offensive firepower and defensive playmakers to make the Vikings work for their place in the Gold Bowl. But do they have what it takes to beat them?
The Warriors have the potential
The Warriors’ 6–6 regular season record does not fully explain their progress over the last three months. London started 0–3, but gradually found a winning formula built around the running game and an increasingly aggressive defense. Over two key games against Berlin and Paris, the Warriors rushed for 552 yards while allowing just 95 on the ground. That physical identity could be particularly important against Vienna this Saturday.
London also proved they can compete with elite opposition. Their final regular season game against Rhein Fire ended in a 40–30 defeat, but the Warriors produced 488 total yards and led at several stages against a more than competive team. London quarterback Karé Lyles threw for 336 yards and two touchdowns, while wide receiver Marcus Libman exploded for 219 yards and two scores. Was this the warm-up for Saturday?
QB Karé Lyles gives London an experienced quarterback
At the centre of the Warriors’ offense is Karé Lyles, the franchise’s first-ever signing. The American quarterback has already delivered several major performances, including 371 passing yards and four touchdowns against Firenze and 272 yards with three touchdowns against the Paris Lights this season.
Lyles has also shown he can respond under pressure. Against Rhein Fire, he attempted 44 passes and produced 328 passing yards. If London can protect him and give him time to find Marcus Libman, Kevin Laryea and the rest of the receiving corps, the Warriors have the weapons to score quickly.
A ground game that can win games
London’s rushing attack offers another reason for optimism. Andy Owusu has been one of the key figures in the turnaround, producing 689 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 112 carries. Tyrrell Bovelle has added 676 yards himself, while his explosive 158-yard performance against Rhein Fire showed that London can keep attacking on the ground even against a strong defense.
Can the Warriors defense slow down the Vikings?
The biggest challenge is obvious: Vienna finished the regular season 11–1 and already defeated London 62–10 earlier this year. But the Warriors are not the same team they were in June. Defensive end Jezreel Agu has become a major difference-maker, recording seven sacks this season, while linebacker Ryan Claudio leads London with 86 tackles.
That combination gives London a realistic path to an upset: control the clock, attack on the ground, pressure Vikings quarterback Ben Holmes and force the game into a fourth-quarter battle. Vienna remain the favourites, but the Warriors have spent the second half of their first AFLE season proving that they belong in this game.
