Four Quarterbacks – One Goal: Who’s Got What It Takes to Make It to the AFLE Gold Bowl?
One game. One shot. This weekend, four teams find out who’s playing for the AFLE Gold Bowl, and who’s watching it from home. Which quarterback has what it takes to get his team there?
Karé Lyles – London Warriors
That a team starting the season 0-3 could still crash the playoffs, and that quarterback Karé Lyles has the tools to get them there, has become clear over the past few weeks. The London Warriors showed just how competitive they can be against title favorites Rhein Fire in the AFLE Mallorca Game, pushing the their opponent to the brink in a 30-40 shootout at the Battle at the Beach.
Yet it was Lyles himself who handed that game away: a costly interception proved to be the decisive moment, swinging momentum right when the Warriors needed it most. It’s a snapshot of the flaw that could keep him out of the AFLE Gold Bowl: turnovers. Lyles has thrown 12 interceptions this season, the most in the league, and been sacked 18 times. The arm talent to drag his team past anyone is clearly there; the question is whether he can protect the ball long enough to prove it on the biggest stage.
Ben Holmes – Vienna Vikings
At 11-2, the Vienna Vikings are the best team in the league, but does that make Ben Holmes the league’s best quarterback, and a lock for the AFLE Gold Bowl? 2,700 yards, 33 touchdowns, and just 3 interceptions are numbers that speak for themselves. Yet Holmes doesn’t do it alone: he’s backed by an exquisite offensive line, a versatile receiving corps, and 2,181 rushing yards from top backs Albert Wiesigstrauch and Karri Pajarinen, who’ve combined for 18 rushing touchdowns.
That ground game, however, is about to run into a wall. The London Warriors have shown, that they have one of the strongest rushing defenses in the league, meaning Wiesigstrauch and Pajarinen may not get the same room to operate they’ve enjoyed all season. If London takes away the run, the AFLE Gold Bowl question comes right back to Holmes: can he beat a stingy defense with his arm alone, or has the Vikings‘ record been carried as much by their legs as by their quarterback?
Kenji Bahar – Rhein Fire
Kenji Bahar has steered his team to a steady 10-2 record all season, backed by 2,739 yards, 32 touchdowns, and just 6 interceptions – numbers that earned him the AFLE’s Week 2 MVP nod right out of the gate. When Rhein Fire and Panthers Wroclaw first met in Week 8, Bahar and company made it look easy, routing them 48-7.
But the Wroclaw that’s waiting in the playoffs is a different team. Since that blowout, Panthers Wroclaw has clawed their way to a 10-2 record of their own, powered by two-time MVP Jameson Wang and a defense strong enough to end Vienna’s unbeaten run with a 34-31 upset. The Week 8 tape means little now. If Bahar wants to prove he has what it takes to reach the Gold Bowl, he’ll have to beat a Wroclaw team that’s grown into a genuine contender, not the one his defense dismantled weeks ago.
Jameson Wang – Wroclaw Panthers
If you strip away the storylines and just watch the quarterback, Jameson Wang might have the best case of anyone to lead his team to the AFLE Gold Bowl. He’s thrown for 2,726 yards, second-most in the league, and has been named the fans‘ Week MVP twice – most recently after torching London Warriors for six touchdowns in a single half en route to a 41-0 shutout in Week 13.
What sets Wang apart is how he’s answered his toughest test. After Vienna handed Wroclaw a 42-23 loss in their first meeting back in Week 2, Wang and the Panthers got their revenge in the rematch, beating the previously unbeaten Vikings 34-31 to end their perfect season. That’s not just a signature win – it’s proof Wang can slug it out with the league’s best quarterback and come out ahead. On arm talent and big-game moments alone, he’s the one I’d bet on to get his team to the AFLE Gold Bowl.
Who’s got what it takes?
Four quarterbacks, four very different cases. Lyles has the ceiling to beat anyone, but 12 interceptions and 18 sacks are the kind of numbers that end seasons in one bad quarter. Holmes has the gaudiest stat line and the best record in the league, but this weekend he faces the one defense built to take away the run game he leans on. Bahar has the résumé and the blowout win to point to, except the team on the other sideline this time isn’t the one he beat in Week 8.
That leaves Wang. He is the only quarterback here who has already beaten the league’s best team, on the road to the upset, in a game that mattered. When the pressure was highest, he delivered – and that’s exactly the trait that tends to separate a good quarterback from one who’s actually built for the AFLE Gold Bowl. If only one of these four has what it takes to get there, it’s Wang.
