American Football League Europe Becomes Majority Owner of Rhein Fire, Securing the Franchise’s Future in European American Football

The American Football League Europe (AFLE) announced today that it has become the majority owner of its Rhein Fire franchise as part of the AFLE Stabilization Plan, giving the league a controlling interest in the franchise. The change of ownership resolves an acute financial emergency at the franchise, averts an imminent insolvency, and secures both the stability and the playability of one of the most storied franchises in European American football – beyond the 2026 season.

Cool Down — Built to Recover. Code AFLE

This decision reflects the core philosophy on which the AFLE was founded: a professionally managed, long-term financed American football league in Europe that actively stands by its franchises in challenging moments, rather than leaving them to fend for themselves. With Rhein Fire, the AFLE goes a decisive step further than a support measure: by taking a majority ownership stake in the franchise, the league gains a controlling interest and places the franchise’s future directly in its own hands.

A Change of Ownership, A Commitment to the Future

“Rhein Fire is one of the most storied and recognized names in European American football. A franchise with this history deserves more than a rescue package. It deserves an owner who is fully invested in its future,” said Moritz Heisler, Managing Director and COO of the AFLE. He added, “That is exactly what today’s change of ownership delivers. By becoming the majority owner of Rhein Fire, the AFLE is no longer only backing the franchise from the outside – we now hold a controlling interest and a direct role in its future, on and off the field, for the long term.”

Stability and Playability Secured

The change of ownership fully secures Rhein Fire’s day-to-day operations and removes the immediate risk of insolvency. As the franchise’s new majority owner, the AFLE now has direct oversight of Rhein Fire’s finances and governance, a structure designed to guarantee both the franchise’s long-term stability and its continued playability on the field, season after season.

“Stability and playability are two sides of the same coin,” Heisler said. “Players, coaches and staff need the certainty that their franchise will exist in the future. Fans need the certainty that their team will be there next season, and the season after that. Taking a majority stake in Rhein Fire is how the AFLE delivers on that certainty.”

Rhein Fire Remains a Cornerstone of Football in North Rhine-Westphalia

Rhein Fire is one of the most recognizable names in European American football, with a history dating back to the 1990s and a loyal fanbase across North Rhine-Westphalia. Under the AFLE’s majority ownership, the franchise remains a fully active member of the league, both on the field and operationally. With the change of ownership now in place, Rhein Fire heads into the off-season from a position of financial and operational stability, rather than the uncertainty they faced only weeks ago.The Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena in Duisburg, Rhein Fire’s home venue this season, remains one of the league’s flagship venues: this Sunday, September 6, 2026, it will host the AFLE’s first-ever Gold Bowl, the climax of the league’s inaugural season.
